COVID-19 Update

Rona has impacted everyone and it has had some affects on Ninth hour.

The first is online classes. My professors started giving more work than usual which really cut down my writing time. That’s why the ZY countdown post have been lacking.

Secondly, I’m being more cautious about my money and spending, so things like Character designs and Series posters have been postponed until further notice.

Good news is that Zero Year has NOT been postponed. I have enough material to post weekly up until early November!!!!

May 29th 3:00am eastern is still the release date and time of Zero Year

I hope everyone stays safe!!!

A Story on Blackness vs A Black Story

Yesterday on twitter I came across this tweet and article:

https://themuse.jezebel.com/in-blackaf-kenya-barris-only-has-love-for-white-people-1843015698/amp?__twitter_impression=true

(You should definitely read this article before you continue reading this post.)

When I was watching #Blackaf I didn’t know how I felt about it. To me it felt like a PG-13 version of Black-ish. When I read the article it summed up how I felt into words.

What I pulled from it is that Kenya writes stories about blackness more so than he writes black stories. When I say this I don’t mean that the characters or story arcs in his work are unrealistic. Every black experience is valid, but most of his work is explaining black people to white people. I’d rather watch a black story about a black family.

I dropped Black-ish, grown-ish and never started mixed-ish. I loved black-ish in the beginning. I like the Actors of Grown-ish but the story didn’t really stick for me. None of it felt real. It felt like the Ned’s declassified school survival guide, but black edition for white people.

I just want a black story. Story about black people or even a story that has black people in it. By a “story that has black people in it” I mean what if a story/movie like The Note Book was played by black actors. I don’t mean I want the black version of everything. I want black original stories that aren’t tied to black struggle, pain or made for the purpose for non-black people to “learn” blackness. I want a story that happens to be told with black people.

Now I fully understand that slavery, segregation, Jim Crow, Systematic oppression and racism all shaped the black experience in America, but show me that through plot and character arcs. Don’t center the story on the discussion about it.

Sidenote: I think the “ish-universe” does so well because the core audience feels that having the “conversation” on race is all that needs to be done. The conversation is a good STARTING POINT not an endpoint.

I’ve been black my whole life and I will be black the rest of my life. Telling me the black struggle feels like a person with a Phd in Mathmatics sitting through a pre-algebra class. I don’t want it nor do I need it.

It sucks that the default in storytelling is white, but the worst thing is that the default black story is pain and struggle. I’d like a story when the black man isn’t getting killed. A story when the black woman isn’t being abused. A story when black children (especially black girls) aren’t forced to grow up way too early. A story when the black queer character isn’t just the humorist best friend that ends up with the only other random black queer character.

Im sure black stories like that are out there, but I feel that aren’t being given a chance. Shout out to all of the black writers and creatives trying to convey black stories and art accurately.

What show, movie, book and or character did you feel told or had a real black story?

Power System

Power System

Zero Year has an elemental power system with six different elements broken into two groups. Before we get into the elements, we have to get into the power itself. Ashe (Ah shay). The word ashe comes from the Yoruba tradition. It is described as the divine flow of energy that makes up everything. In Zero Year, ashe is the source of power, life and spirit in all living things. Ashe is more essential than food, water even oxygen. There’s no chance of life without it.

Spirit Beings

Maisha Gyata Mola

The Life Lion Lord also known as the Superior Supreme or All-mother. Superior is the mother and creator of everything. She is the only Spirit that can use all Ashe Forms.

Siku Motai Roho

The Sun Fire Eagle Spirit. Motai is the ruler of the suns and Fire ashe. Motai can’t use Life or Wind Ashe. They can only use Fire ashe and the Worlding elements in the siku influence.

Usiku Upebundi Roho

The Moon wind Owl Spirit. Upebundi is. The ruler of the moons and Wind Ashe. Upebundi can’t use Life or Fire Ashe. They can only use Wind Ashe and the worlding elements in the Usiku influence

Jiwetembo Roho

The Stone Elephant Spirit. Jiwetembo is the ruler of Earth and protector of all beings with earth ashe. Jiwetembo can only use Earth nature, but can use all of its influences including their specialist form.

Umechui Roho

The Lightning Tiger Spirit. Umechui is the ruler of Lighting and the protector of all beings with water nature. Umechui can only use Lightning nature, but can use all of its influences including their specialist form.

Majipweza Roho

The Water Octopus Spirit. Majipweza is the ruler of Water and the protector of all beings with water nature. Majipweza can only use Water nature, but can use all  of its influences including their specialist form.

Ashe Forms

Ashe has six technically seven forms separated into three main groups: Godly, Worldly and Pure.

Godly Ashe Forms

All of the Ashe forms originate from the All mother and the other spirit beings. The main distinction between them and the other forms is that these forms can’t be used by humans unless the gods choose to gift it to them.

Life Ashe

Life ashe was the first element created by Maisha Gyata Mola (Life Lion Lord) or the All-mother. Life ashe is the power to create and cultivate life. It also is the ability to control and manipulate any plant life from grass, flowers, fruit, trees etc.

Fire Ashe

Fire Ashe was created by the All-mother for Siku Motai Roho (Sun Fire Eagle Spirit) aka Motai. Fire ashe is the power to produce and manipulate Sun fire. Motai’s fire is not like worldly fire. It’s exponentially times hotter.

Wind Ashe

Wind Ashe was created by the All-mother for Usiku Upebundi Roho (Moon Wind Owl Spirit) a.k.a. Upebundi. Wind Ashe is the power to produce and manipulate moon wind.

Worldly Ashe Forms

The Second group of ashe forms are the forms that people can possibly be born with. It is very rare someone’s ashe manifest in more than one form. It is even more rare that they are able to use both elements. A person’s Ashe nature will be based on where they were born and where they live before the age of seven.

Earth Ashe

Earth Ashe was created by the All-mother for Jiwetembo. Earth ashe is the power to produce and manipulate earth.

Lightning Ashe

Lightning Ashe was created by the All-mother for Umechui. Lightning ashe is the power to produce and manipulate Lightning.

Water Ashe

Water Ashe was created by the All-mother for Majipweza. Water ashe is the power to produce and manipulate Water.

Natural Ashe

Natural Ashe is also called Ancient or Sage ashe. Natural ashe is the original form of ashe. Anyone can use natural ashe, but it’s more difficult for those who develop an ashe element.

STG Ashe

STG is Space, Time and Gravity ashe. STG is three separate ashe types. STG ashe is gifted by the gods. Jiwetembo gifts Space, Umechui gifts Time and Majipweza gifts Gravity.

Psyche/Mental Ashe

Psyche Ashe is the power to build a telekinetic relationship with ashe. This ashe type can be achieved by anyone through mastering meditation.

Ashe Influences

The worldly ashe forms have influences based on the Godly forms. Base, Siku(Solar) and Usiku (Lunar). Everyone has the base influence of their nature, but not everyone has a Siku or Usiku influence. The influence that a person manifest is hereditary. Though it is unlikely it is possible to have both influences (more likely than having two elements). For most, their influence manifest during puberty. If it hasn’t then they most likely are base only.

Ashe Influences of Earth Nature

  • Base: Rock, Metal(Control only), Mud
    • Siku (Solar): Lava
    • Usiku (Lunar): Sand

Ashe Influences of Water Nature

  • Base: Water, Blood (Control only)
    • Siku (Solar): Boil/Scald
    • Usiku (Lunar): Ice/Snow

Ashe Influences of Lightning Nature

  • Base: Electricity, Light (production only)
    • Siku (Solar): Magnetism (to ashe not metal)
    • Usiku (Lunar): Storm (Thunder, sky lightning), Lightning bolts

Ashe Abilities

Some fighters are born with different abilities. There are different abilities for each nature. Each ability is different from the others. A person’s ability usually align with their influence. It’s possible for someone to have multiple abilities.

Earth Nature Abilities

Base ability

  • Stone skin: hard to pierce or cut their skin. (skin is not actually stone)
  • Metal production: most can only manipulate metal. They can produce it.

Sand abilities

  • Sandstorm: They can turn their bodies into sandstorms.
  • Sand cutter: They can make their skin hard like sand to cut opponents.

Lava abilities

  • Pseudo Flame: The ability to emit, produce and control an ashe aura from their body that is similar to fire (Not like Motai sun fire).
  • Heat resistance: Extremely hot temperatures won’t burn their skin.

Water Nature Abilities

Base ability

  • Night moon: The moon greatly increases their strength. The moon’s effect is compared to the first stage of spirit state.
  • Circulation: They can control their blood flow to help heal themselves.

Ice abilities

  • Cooler: they can use their spirit energy to cool themselves which will restore there stamina and durability.
  • Frost: They can freeze themselves to help avoid pain.

Boil abilities

  • Evaporation: They can turn their body or body parts into steam upon contact to avoid injury.
  • Steaming: Their bodies can emit large amounts of steam to help hide themselves.

Lightning Nature Abilities

Base ability

  • Shocker: When attacked physically, their body will respond with a natural shock wave that may cause temporary paralysis.
  • Flash: The can produce a large amount of light.

Storm abilities

  • Cloud rider: The ability to create Ashe clouds and ride/fly them.
  • Cloud control: The ability to use clouds as a part of their ashe technique.

Magnet abilities

  • Metal magnet: They can magnetically control metal objects.
  • Shaker: These magnet users can both push and pull (most can only do one). Also, they can combine them both and “shake”.

Ancient Nature Abilities

Natural ashe abilities are different from other techniques. They can possible be learned through training.

Sensitivity

Ability to read ashe (like emotional states)

6th Sense

Ability to feel ashe and remember ashe signatures. This is the

Ashe eye

Ability to see ashe (ashe X-ray vision).

Ashe Techniques

Techniques are different moves using ashe. Techs can be used across all Ashe elements and influences they just have to be learned. There are five different classifications among the techniques: Primary, Secondary, Forbidden, Ancient, Ancient Forbidden.

Primary Ashe Techniques

These are the easiest to learn and are taught to children.

     Split Clones

With this tech users split their ashe and make a clone of themselves.

     Fake Clones

Unlike splits, fakes are weaker clones with the purpose to trap or deceive an opponent. They aren’t as strong or durable.

     Sensory

Everyone has the ability to feel ashe. Sensory puts that ability to use. Users can directly locate different ashe signatures in a limited radius.

     Stealth

When someone use their ashe to hide their physical presence

Secondary Ashe Techniques

     Illusions

When someone uses their ashe to create illusions that confuse the six senses (sight, hearing, touch, smell, taste and ashe feeling).

     Disruption

When someone uses their ashe to disrupt their opponents ashe attacks.

     Locking

When someone uses their ashe to lock their opponents ashe with in them. This stops them from using ashe.

     Multi

Multi clones are like Splits but instead of splitting their ashe, someone use ashe in the atmosphere to make clones.

     Stacking

When someone uses more than one technique at the same time.

Forbidden Ashe techniques

These techniques are forbidden because they were made to kill or break laws. These techs are harder to perform than secondary techs.

     Enchantment

When someone uses ashe to control the mind or will of others. Very illegal but also extremely hard to do.

     Explosion

When someone uses their ashe to cause an explosion with in another’s ashe network causing them to die. Their bodies won’t explode but they’ll definitely will die.

     Suppression

When someone uses their ashe to suppress the ashe flow with in another. This is like cutting off circulation and suffocating.

     Fraud

Everyone has a unique ashe signature. There like fingerprints. Fraud is when you purposely create a false signature or impersonate someone’s.

     Masking

When someone uses their ashe to purposely hid their ashe signature.

Ancient/Sage ashe Techniques

These are techniques that were forgotten between the Ancient and second cycle. They call for the use of a large amount natural ashe that is extremely hard to harness with an ashe element.

Ancient/Sage Forbidden Techniques

These ancient / sage techniques that are thought as forbidden because they were created to kill or break other laws. These are harder to perform than ancient / sage techniques.

Maisha Sayari

Maisha Sayari is similar but very different from earth. Maisha Sayari Translates from Swahili as Life Planet.

  • Realm Calendar: There are 24 hours a day, 6 days a week, 5 weeks and 30days in every month, and three months in each of the four seasons (spring, summer, autumn and winter). There is no hemisphere difference in weather. It’s the same season everywhere in realm.
  • Days of the week: Day of life, Day of Fire, Day of Wind, Day of Earth, Day of Lightning, Day of Water. There are five weeks in each month so there are 5 different days of fire, earth, water etc.
  • Months of the seasons: Technically there are only three types of months Beginning (Eagle) of a season, Middle (Lion) of a season and End (Owl) of a season. Example: Eagle’s spring, Lion’s spring, Owl’s spring, Eagle’s summer, Lion’s summer, Owl’s summer, Eagle’s autumn, Lion’s autumn, Owl’s autumn, Eagle’s winter, Lion’s winter, Owl’s Winter.
  • Cycles: every so often Maisha Sayari is renewed. When the realm is renewed it is the beginning of a cycle. The realm is over 50,000 years old, but it is in its 8th cycle.
  • The date: (Day/Month/Year/Cycle). Example (06/02/1394/08). How people say the date: First day of water in the lion’s spring. People don’t state the year unless it’s a new year or if they are mentioning a past or future year. The cycle is almost always left off because its implied.

*There are five different continents in the realm. I plan to go in further detail about continents in later Countdown Post*

  1. New moon: 1
  2. Waxing Crescent: 2-4
  3. First Quarter: 5-8

Technology

Although Zero Year is set in the late 1390s, They are far more technically advanced than we are. I’d say they’re at least 100 years ahead.

Thanks for reading!!! I hope you share and continue to read in the future!!!

Representation is Important

I wanted to make this post next week but with today being the last day of black history month it couldn’t wait. Representation is important in the black community. It’s important that we see ourselves in main stream media, art and Literature. In mainstream media, art and literature The black community is under represented and when we are represented if feel token at times. As a black creative I want to do my best to end that trend. I know how it feels to be accurately represented. It’s such an amazing feeling no matter if your a kid or an adult.

How much representation is in Zero Year?

One of the main goals of all Ninth Hour Fiction series and stories is to represent the Black community and Zero year isn’t exempted from this goal.

A lot of the terminology are words or a combination of words from African languages like Swahili, Zulu, Twi, Kwa (Yoruba) and more. Cultural norms, practices and traditions from Africa and African diaspora are used an adapted in Zero Year.

I don’t write “rep” characters. Rep characters are characters made solely to represent a group. I write characters who happen to represent under represented groups. Meaning an LGBTQ+ character’s character arc won’t be their sexuality or gender identity. That won’t be the only thing to them. Also they aren’t side characters with single appearance that you’ll forget about. They are Main and supporting characters that have weight in the story.

In Zero Year all skin tones with in the black community are represented. Dark, Medium, Light, and Albino. There are even Character’s with Vitiligo.

Black hair is represented from texture, length and color.

There are Hijabi women.

There are disabled characters (One blind and One deaf character canon confirmed so far).

There is Mental health and illness representation. Characters with Mood disorders like depression and Bipolar disorder. Characters with anxiety disorders, Personality disorders and more.

There’s body representation. All female characters aren’t thin and all male characters aren’t muscle heads.

There’s equal gender representation. Men don’t over populate the character cast. Women are main characters and they aren’t just super nurses made to heal the good guys.

There’s LGBTQ+ representation with 11 canon confirmed LGBTQ+ characters so far.

There’s age representation. The cast aren’t a group of 14 year olds that hang out with that one old guy.

All of these groups are a part of the black community and should not excluded from Main stream media, art or literature.

What TV show, movie, story or character did you first feel represented in? What was that experience like? How do you feel about representation? How do you think it should be executed? Lastly are you excited about Zero Year?

Thanks for reading!!! I hope you share and continue to read in the future!!!

What is Ninth Hour Fiction?

Ninth Hour Fiction is an amateur fiction writing blog. The main purpose of 9thhr is to create and present original stories and characters that represent the black community accurately and realistically.

9thhr started in January of 2019. I started writing creatively as a new year resolution. Fast forward a year later, now I can’t go a day without writing.

The name Ninth Hour has some meaning to it. Often times I find myself writing in the middle in the night right after a dream trying to create a narrative out of it. It’s usually around 3am when I’m up writing. 3am is the Ninth Hour of the night and nine is my favorite number.

Zero Year

Myth or Taboo? It’s the nineties (1390s) and the cycle could be coming to an end in 1400. It is currently the 8th cycle and the only thing people know about the end is there will be a “Red Moon”. With many different conspiracy theories and religious beliefs about the “Zero Year”, People are split between thinking it’s all a myth or that there is a Supernatural battle and or natural disaster apocalypse approaching. Despite their views on the matter, Political and military officials are working their hardest to find out what nobody knows about.

Zero Year is a series I’ve been working on for a while now and it will be the first series released (May 29th). The countdown to Zero Year has already begun.

Zero Year is made of multiple sagas that takes place in the same world and are connected by the same plot.

Each Saga has a different main cast and tells a different story that build world, characters and plot.

Leading up to May 29th there will be post relating to Zero Year like character reveals and other content. Stay updated and keep your eyes peeled.
